- Summary:
- Károly Simonyi (1916-2001) was born in Hungary, educated there as physicist (he also earned a degree in law), became a professor in the electrical engineering department at the Budapest Technical University, and then lost his teaching position in the 1960s, squeezed out by an unfavorable political climate. The project he undertook on his own was to tell the history of physics inclusive of cultural, philosophical, and societal aspects. His book was published in Hungarian, then in German, and now in English--for a worldwide audience--as explained in the foreword by the author's son, Charles Simonyi (who is prominent in the scientific community in the US). The format is oversize (10x11") to accommodate sidebar columns on each page filled with hundreds of images, drawings with explanations, quotations, and profiles. Merging science and the humanities, this work is unique in its scope and depth: clearly a labor of love and a gift to a wide readership. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
