Summary:
Though AElfric of Eynsham (c. 955-c. 1010) pleaded otherwise, his collection of saints lives had already been added to while he was still alive. The principal surviving manuscript, in the British Library, has four lives that scholars agree were not by AElfric, and these are discussed in turn by medievalists. So much scholarship on these texts has been designed to distinguish them from AElfric's work that their own merits have tended to be overlooked or interpreted as faults. An effort is made here to see them in their own light. They are the Life of Saint Euphrosyne and the economics of sanctity; Saint Mary of Egypt; the Seven Sleepers, eros, and the unincorporable infinite of the human person; and reversal of fortune, response, and reward in the Passion of Saint Eustace. There is no index. Medieval Institute Publications is at Western Michigan University. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
