Summary:
Flanagan, who works in international security, alliance relations, and US foreign policy at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, is joined by other contributors associated with the Center for a report on the impact of the global financial crisis and the subsequent European recession and sovereign debt crisis. They discuss the issue of Europe's ability to sustain its contributions to the partnership with the US and its NATO allies in maintaining transatlantic security and contributing to international stability and economic development. The report reviews the evolution of the current context and major economic forecasts for Europe, and assesses the impact of these trends on the European Union, then analyzes European foreign assistance budgets. The impact of economic trends on military spending and capabilities and the defense industry is examined, as are the broader implications of these trends for the transatlantic partnership and ways to mitigate the effects of economic constraints in the European and transatlantic contexts. The report concludes that Europe is less likely to be a capable, willing, and interested partner as the economic and political crisis continues. There is no index.
