Biography/History:

George H. Carter was a widower with four children, living in Coolbaugh Township, Monroe, Pennsylvania. It appears that one of his sons, William H. Carter (b. 1884), remained in Coolbaugh and married one of the father's servants. The 1910 census lists Susan K. Wesser and two children, Charley Wesser and Glenwood Wesser, as living with Gorge H. Carter and his son William H. Carter. The 1930 census lists William H. Carter as head of household with spouse Susan K. Carter and children Glenwood Carter, Raymond Carter, and John Carter.

Summary:

A collection of responses to advertisements placed in newspapers in Pennsylvania, frequently in the Philadelphia area, by widower George H. Carter for a "middle-aged woman for housekeeper on farm."
