- Summary:
- This study of rapid economic growth in small countries examines the recent economic histories of Singapore, Finland, and Ireland (referred to in the text by the acronym sifire) and explores the lessons of their successes and failures as they might be applicable to currently developing nations in Africa and other "late-starting" economies. The text discusses topics related to human capital development, urban networks, and growth driven policies relating to these factors to describe past successes in the subject nations over the past decades and provides analysis relating to more universal applications of the principles responsible for that success in international contexts. The volume includes large amounts of statistical data as well as a collection of detailed appendices on economic growth in the sifire nations. Yusef is a professor of economics at George Washington University and Nabeshima works for the Institute of Developing Economics -Japan External Trade Organization.
