Summary:
This monograph on the history of science examines the effect of external social forces on the definition of science and explores the ways in which modern social pressures--to publish, to retain rights, and to monetize science--corrupt the process of knowledge development and discovery. Basing his work in the field of psychology, Valsiner divides the material into sections covering presentations and histories of science in society, psychology as a liminal science, and transcending the past. Individual chapters address topics such as axiomatic bases for experimental knowledge construction, psychology and philosophy in the search for wissenschaft, and globalization and its role in science. Valsiner is a professor of psychology at Clark University. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
