Summary:
St. George, a general practitioner who edits the newsletter of the Colenso Society, compiles letters to editors written by printer, missionary, traveler, naturalist, and politician William Colenso (1811-1899) mostly for newspapers in Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. The letters are to papers such as the Hawke's Bay Herald and national papers like Auckland's Herald and New Zealander, Wellington's Independent and New Zealand Spectator and Cook's Strait Guardian, and Dannevirke's Bush Advocate and the Waipawa Mail, with added excerpts from newspapers if they had information about the subjects of some of the more obscure letters. The letters illustrate his ideas and beliefs, his liberal political and humanitarian views, and his responses to the views of bigots writing for editors wanting exciting copy.
