Summary:
This introductory overview details elements of cognitive therapy, as developed and taught by A. T Beck and colleagues, and illustrates concepts with client examples. A DVD is available separately, demonstrating therapy with a real client. After a brief history of cognitive therapy, the book explains the cognitive model of psychopathology and how this model is translated into a model of psychotherapy. The entire cognitive therapy process is described in depth, from assessment and case formulation through treatment, interventions, and variations for different disorders. The book closes with a critical assessment of cognitive therapy and a discussion of future developments. Summary charts, example forms, and a glossary are included. The companion DVD, available separately, offers six unedited therapy sessions, in which author Dobson (clinical psychology, University of Calgary, Canada) uses cognitive therapy approaches to help a client with panic attacks. A therapist commentary track gives insight on why Dobson uses particular techniques in each session. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
