Summary:
Based on his fieldwork in a Thangmi-speaking region in Nepal as part of a Himalayan Languages Project,, Turin (descriptive and comparative linguistics, Leiden U., the Netherlands) presents a valuable contribution to understanding the grammar and ethnolinguistic context of this endangered Tibeto-Burman language and its speakers. V.1 features a map of the location of Thangmi-speaking communities in Nepal; a description and analysis of the language's morphophonological and other features; summary of previous scholarship; and figures and tables with demographic, grammatical, and kinship information. V.2 contains transcribed oral texts representing a range of speech styles from casual conversations to recordings of shamans' narratives on the origins of their ethnic community, a lexicon of both dialects with sample sentences with Nepali translations in some cases, kinship charts, a bibliography, and the index for both volumes.
