Summary:
This book covers the wide range of types of continental carbonates, their sedimentary environments, diagenesis and geochemistry. Carbonate sedimentary deposits are widely distributed among basins through space and time, but their characteristics and processes of formation vary greatly. This has made it quite difficult to produce a framework that explains the relationship between the different sedimentary environments in which continental carbonates may form and the processes involved in their formation. In large part, this is due to the complex relationship between carbonates sedimentation and climate, tectonics, eustacy, geochemistry, and evolutionary biology. Therefore, the study of continental carbonates is multidisciplinary including sedimentary petrologists, sedimentologists, geomorphologists, paleontologists and soil scientists.
The content of the book is an overarching survey that provides a broad framework for the study of continental carbonates and enhances consideration of them as important tools for the interpretation of paleoclimatology, paleohydrology and paleontology of ancient sedimentary basins. Moreover, some recent continental carbonates occurs in sites of special natural or historical interest, thus better understanding the formation of these sediments may optimize efforts to protect and preserve these sites. Importantly, each chapter serves as an introduction to a specific topic, emphasizing the current state of knowledge and suggesting directions for future research.
The contents of the book are organized in two volumes. Volumes 61 focuses on facies, environments and processes and includes a chapter on trace fossils, whereas Volume 62 provides an overall review on geochemistry, diagenesis and applications of these carbonates.
