Summary:

Reporting from excavations and material analysis in 2002, Carballo (archaeology, Boston U.) explores the production of weaponry and martially themed symbolic items by artisans working obsidian next to the Moon Pyramid at the ancient Mexican metropolis and early state capital Teotihuacan. Rather than present another broad survey of the scale of production through the ages, he details a particular case about AD 450, and reconstructs the social practices that such production would have served. He covers crafting state political authority, Teotihuacan and the obsidian workshop deposits at the Moon Pyramid, the excavations, developing the analytical framework through lithic replication, and technological and contextual analysis of the deposits.
