Summary:
Seamus Heaney's translation of Beowulf, published in 1999, stirred up reviews in several dozen publications and attracted a readership beyond academic circles. A performance of the first 852 lines at the Thirty-eighth International Congress on Medieval Studies in Kalamazoo, Michigan in 2003, stirred up excitement about oral theory and performance. This volume contains roughly 30 contributions addressing issues of translation and of performance, and reviewing Heaney's work. The included DVD contains readings of the first 52 lines in Old English, Czech, Spanish, Icelandic Hungarian, and Italian, and selections from Turkish and Asian epics.
