Summary:
Jillson (political science, Southern Methodist U.) analyzes Texas' political culture and its impact on public policy in the areas of jobs, education, social services, criminal justice, transportation, energy and the environment, and taxation. He compares Texas public policy with other states, especially California and Florida, and the US as a whole. Opening chapters show how the Texas model of government is similar to that of other southern and southwestern states, but with distinctive elements, and offer an overview of the state's demographics. Later chapters examine specific policy areas, arguing that Texas' commitment to low taxes has starved programs in most areas. A final chapter reviews the history of Texas tax policies and gives ideas for reform. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
