- Summary:
- Folz (1435/40-1513) was the first writer in Germany to print his own work, including his Meisterlieder, a genre that had never been published before, says Huey (German, U. of Louisiana-Lafayette). She continues that he demonstrates unusual knowledge and ambition for an unprestigious barber-surgeon, and represents an early stage of the transition from performance to print through his work as a carnival playwright, Meistersinger, and printer. After outlining his life, she looks at Folz and printing, body and soul, Mary and Folz's transgressive woman, anti-Jewishness, and popular medicine. Quotations are in German followed by their English translation. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
