- Summary:
- When a Caribbean slave named Rosalie escaped during the Haitian Revolution, she began one family's quest for freedom. This book tells the story of five generations of the Vincent/Tinchant family within the context of the political and social movements of the 19th and early 20th centuries. After Rosalie and her daughter Elizabeth fled to Cuba, later generations of the family migrated back and forth across the Atlantic between the US, the Caribbean, Europe, and Africa for business and personal reasons and to escape racism and oppression against Creoles. The family's story continues with the case of Rosalie's great-great-granddaughter Marie-Jose, who was arrested in Belgium due to her role in the resistance against the Nazis. The book contains b&w historical illustrations and photos. Scott and Hebrard are affiliated with the University of Michigan. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
