The essays were first published in The Colophon.

Sometimes the experience may be simple and almost painless; sometimes it may be long-drawn-out and disheartening. The variations seem limited only by the number of participants."--Foreword.
The Dreiser essay, "The Early Adventures of Sister Carrie," was republished in the 1932 Modern Library Edition of "Sister Carrie" published by Random House.
"'Breaking into Print' is set on the Monotype in Baskerville, a twentieth century recutting of the type originally designed in the eighteenth century by John Baskerville ... The composition, printing, and binding of this book is by The Haddon Craftsmen, Camden, New Jersey. The paper is an 85-pound antique book. The illustrations reproducing manuscript pages are printed by offset."
Black cloth binding with the title, 20 contributors and publisher lettered in gilt on spine. Front cover has title lettered in gilt and stamped in blind within a design stamped in blind.
