Cotton (India). Return to an order of the Honourable the House of Commons, dated 15 February 1847;--for, a return "of papers in the possession of the East India Company, showing what measures have been taken since 1836 to promote the cultivation of cotton in India, with the particulars and result of any experiments which have been made by the said company, with a view to introduce the growth of American cotton, or to encourage the production of native cotton in India." [N.B.--This is not a complete return. The papers on the records of the East India Company relating to the measures recently adopted for improving the cultivation of cotton in India are very voluminous, and a large portion of them refer to mere matters of detail, possessing no permanent or general interest. A selection of those documents only which contain information of practical importance, showing the success or failure of the experiments in different localities, and the means which have been pursued in carrying them out, has been prepared for presentation to the Honourable House.].
