Poor rates, &c. Return to an order of the Honourable the House of Commons, dated 31 August 1848;--for, a return "showing the amount of money levied for poor rates and county rates, and the amount of money expended for the relief and maintenance of the poor, during the year ended Lady-Day 1847; also, the population in 1841, and the annual value of rateable property in 1847, with the rate in the pound of the levy and of the expenditure for the relief of the poor on the annual value of rateable property, and the rate per head of such levy and expenditure on the population in certain large towns and parishes, and in some of the agricultural unions, in various parts of England and Wales:" A return "showing the population, according to the census of 1801, 1811, 1821, 1831, and 1841, the number of inhabited houses at each of the same periods, the amount of money expended for the relief and maintenance of the poor during each of the years ended at Lady-Day 1834 to 1847, both inclusive; with the average price of wheat per quarter in each year; also, the annual value of real property rated to the poor rates in 1841 and 1847, in each of the counties in England and Wales; specifying the increase per cent. of the population of each county in 1841 compared with that of 1801, the rate per cent. of increase or decrease in the expenditure for the relief of the poor in 1847 compared with 1834 (the last parochial year prior to the passing of the Poor Law Amendment Act), and the rate in the pound of such expenditure in 1841 and 1847 on the annual value of rateable property, together with the area of each county in English statute acres:" A return "showing the annual value of real property rated to the poor rates for the year ended at Lady-Day 1847; the amount of money expended for the relief and maintenance of the poor during the same period, with the rate in the pound of the expenditure for the relief of the poor on the annual value of rateable property, in every parish, township, or other place in England and Wales maintaining its own poor."
