(Local taxation.) Poor rates.--County rates.--Highways.--Church rates. Return to an order and three several addresses of the Honourable the House of Commons, dated respectively 22 February and 14 August 1839;--for, a return of the amount of money expended for the relief of the poor in each county of England and Wales, during the year ending the 25th day of March 1839;--(pursuant to order of 14 August 1839);--[with previous returns, and remarks.] Accounts from the respective treasurers of counties in England and Wales, of the total amount annually received by them from the county rates, and from any other source of receipt applicable in aid of county rates:--also, of the total amount annually expended by them during their years of account, ending in or with the years 1835, 1836, 1837, 1838; and in cases where such account is made up to Easter, Lady-Day or the spring quarter sessions, an account for the twelvemonth then terminating; in all such accounts of expenditure distinguishing the expense of building and maintaining county bridges, and repairing the roads appertaining thereunto:--also, the expense of building, enlarging, improving or repairing the county gaol, and every house of correction, bridewell, lock-up-house or sheriff's ward within the county:--also, the expense incurred in the maintenance and safe custody of prisoners confined in any of these:--also, expenses incurred in criminal prosecutions at the assizes and quarter sessions:--also, expenses incurred in apprehending and conveying vagrants, and in payment of high and petty constables:--together with a separate account of the debt at this time due and payable out of the county rates, or other county property:-- similar accounts of expenditure on these several objects, during each of the last four years, from the chamberlain, or other proper officer of all counties of cities and counties of towns in England and Wales;--(pursuant to address of 22 February 1839);--[with previous returns, and remarks.] An account of the total sum expended during the year ending the 25th day of March 1839, by surveyors of the highways, in every parish, township or place in England and Wales, separately maintaining its highways; such account of the money expended from the 25th day of March 1838 to the 25th day of March 1839, in making, improving, maintaining or repairing the said highways, to be made up and returned as soon after the said 25th day of March 1839, as the present surveyors shall have prepared and settled their accounts; with such explanations annexed to the return as may appear to be necessary;--(pursuant to address of 22 February 1839):--[with previous returns, and remarks.] An account of all monies received and expended by churchwardens and chapelwardens in England and Wales, from Easter 1838 to Easter 1839; distinguishing the sum received by them from church rates, from other sources of official receipt applicable in aid or in lieu of church rates; and distinguishing from other kinds of expenditure defrayed by them, all expenses incurred in building, improving and maintaining in repair churches or chapels, and any buildings or fences appertaining thereunto:--also, an account of debt (if any) due by the parish or chapelry for expenses chargeable upon the church rates; and if such debt shall have been secured on annuities or other contingent payments, an estimate of the value of every such liability, or a statement of the particulars thereof;--(pursuant to address of 22 February 1839);--[with previous returns, and remarks.].
