- Summary:
- Nam (Biblical studies, George Fox U.) examines the biblical Book of Kings from an economic perspective, focusing on exchange. He draws on the work of Karl Polyani to understand how that exchange was embedded into pre-capitalist social relations, but also examines Karl Marx and Max Weber's approach to political economy. After introducing Polyani's economic anthropology, he considers symmetrical and asymmetrical reciprocity, the ideology of tribute, temple redistribution, non-elite reciprocity, whether Israel understood price-setting markets, and specific references to market exchange in the Book of Kings. The last two chapters presents a social analysis that suggests Israel was a mixed and informal economy, while also pointing out directions for future research. This text is a revision of Nam's doctoral dissertation. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
