Summary:
A central feature of the post-Cold War world has been an apparent contradiction between the growth of various forms of transnationalism on the one hand and a resurgence of nationalism on the other.
In this important new book, Claire Sutherland argues that what she calls the 'cosmopolitan challenge' of transnationalism, regionalisation, globalisation and increased migration has not been fundamentally antagonistic to nationalism and nation-states. While some nation-builders have reacted to globalisation as a potential threat, others see it as a significant boost to their country's power and influence. Nationalist ideology continues to be a key factor in contemporary global politics.
Claire Sutherland shows how different manifestations of nationalism and nation-building have responded to each of the key dimensions of the cosmopolitan challenge. She argues that nationalism is eminently flexible and well able to adapt to the demands of twenty-first-century politics. Book jacket.
