- Summary:
- This text reconsiders Immanuel Kant's famous essay on "Perpetual Peace," which many international relations theorists have looked to as a template for an international democratic order. Ion (political science, U. of Pittsburgh) believes that the essay and Kant's views on politics related to it have been misunderstood. Specifically she takes issue with contractual liberal democratic interpretation of Kant's republicanism and challenges it with a cosmopolitan communitarian one. She spends two chapters comparing and contrasting conceptions and critiques of both democratic peace theory and peaceful communities of states. The work of Deutche, Katzenstein, Foltz, Kacowicz, Russet and Crawford are considered. A concluding chapter applies Ion's considerations to the European Union.
