Summary:
New Zealand musicians, composers, and scholar-practitioners from various genres (mainly from the University of Otago) explore the link between music and place, in this collection of seminar presentations. The book begins with essays on the performer as a researcher and the creative artist as a research practitioner. The second section looks at music as communication and community, with essays on topics such as the gamelan community in Dunedin and musical reassemblage in the jazz diaspora. The third section of the book addresses the relationship between music, history, and local identity, touching on subjects such as songs of old Dunedin and the music of Anthony Ritchie. The book includes musical notation and a few b&w historical song sheet covers. Bendrups teaches music at Queensland Conservatorium, Griffith University. Downes teaches music at the University of Otago; he is also a member of the rock band The Verlaines. The book is distributed in the US by ISBS.
