Summary:

Moremi villagers seek shade from trees. But even more deeply from ancestors, they seek Seriti, spiritual shade. For it is Seriti which protects their very being. To talk of Seriti is to talk of how others see you. For Seriti as spiritual shade shelters have vital light. It is the intimate, in escapable light in which a person exists in social life. With spiritual shade from the ancestors comes dignity. Sometimes, powerful dignity in the eyes of others. But if you fail to take care, if you fail to seek shelter from your ancestors you risk exposure to danger, to feeling and being seen in the wrong light.
