Summary:
Lonnroth has collected 17 articles in English, most from American and Swedish publications since the 1960s; some have had an impact on scholarship and some have not, he says. They are arranged in sections on the historical genesis of early Icelandic literature, the rhetoric of sagas, structure and ideology, the oral performance of edda and saga, and reception and adaptation. He has made a few minor revisions, has excised some duplications, and has extended and to some degree standardized the references. The topics include the transformation of literary genres in Iceland from orality to literacy, dreams in the sagas, ideology and structure in Heimskringla, the double scene of Arrow-Oddr's drinking contest, and a structural approach to the Riddles of the Rok-Stone.
