- Summary:
- The first edition was published in 1987, and the author at that time was drawing on 25 years of study of the retina. The book became a fundamental reference, and a quarter century later, Dowling (neurosciences, Harvard U.; ophthalmology, Harvard Medical School), with double the number of years in the field, undertook revision to bring this reference up to date. He maintains his emphasis, however, on an interdisciplinary approach. Discussion encompasses the functional organization of the vertebrate retina--all vertebrates, warm- and cold-blooded--because he continues to find it useful to find the similarities, and then show how differences among retinas of various types of animals serve various specialized visual needs.
