- Summary:
- As suggested by the opening quote from the TV show Desperate Housewives, gossip still is largely viewed negatively and mostly in association with women. Through theoretical analyses of gossip and readings of early modern French texts of various genre, Hammond (French, U. of Cambridge) argues that gossip can play a positive role in the communication and tolerance of same-sex desires and revealing of private as vs. public behavior. Among the 17th and early 18th century texts he reads as examples of gossip are the Chansonnier Maurepas (song collection), and Marie- Madeleine de Lafayette's novel, La Princesse de Cleves.
