Summary:
This new history of Gabriel's Rebellion, the unsuccessful uprising of slaves in Richmond Virginia in 1800, examines recent literature and archival documents to provide a new perspective on the scope and motivations of this important event in the emancipation struggle. The volume covers the planning of the revolt, its betrayal, and the subsequent hanging of Gabriel and his co-conspirators, and provides a detailed examination of the consequences of the rising on policy and practices of white land owners in the state. The book includes several appendices containing additional information on key characters and events. Nicholls is professor emeritus of history at Utah State University.
