Summary:
There is no precedent to the 2008 economic crisis or its aftermath. It destabilised the world's most important financial centres and only massive state bailouts prevented total economic collapse in a number of nations. Then came a global economic slowdown and the onset of what has become known as the Great Recession. The effects of the crisis have not been uniform across nations, however. Bringing together a range of expert contributions, this important and timely book illustrates that 'the global crisis' is better understood as a variety of crises, each mediated by national context. Consequently, there is an array of potential trajectories for welfare systems, from those where social policy is regarded as incompatible with the post-crisis economy to those where it is considered essential to future economic growth and security. The book documents the initial impact of the crisis and considers the forces reshaping welfare systems under changed circumstances. Book jacket.
