Summary:
This 8.5x10.5" book features more than 100 color and b&w photos and art in various media, all by Iroquois artists. Keating (cultural anthropology, College of Brockport, State U. of New York) approaches Iroquois art from an anthropological perspective, covering visual expressions from ancient times to the present in order to demonstrate the cultural continuity between contemporary Iroquois peoples and their pre-colonial and colonial-era ancestors. The author draws on archival and historical research, collection-based research, recorded interviews and conversations, participant-observation, visual analysis, and photography; most research was carried out between 1997 and 2008. One appendix gives background on documentary research in late 20th-century Iroquois art. A second appendix lists Iroquois painters and photographers documented in the Iroquois Arts 2 Project, 1996-2002. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
