- Summary:
- Almost nothing has been written about the religious oath in Franco-Egyptian or Islamic courtrooms, but this should come as little surprise, says Bechor (Middle Eastern studies, Interdisciplinary Center Herzliya, Israel), because almost nothing has been written about the religious oath in any legal system. He examines the institution of the courtroom oath on the basis of three criteria. The first is Islamic law and debates between different schools and interpreters, and the second is Egyptian law as an example of a major contemporary legal system. The third garners most of his attention, however, as he provides a detailed legal comparison between the Islamic oath and the Franco-Egyptian oath. Among his perspectives are the function of the oath, two oaths and two legal regimes, and perjury as ideology. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
