Summary:
This book by Eppo and Hetty Bleker - which took four decades of study - is mainly about the authenticity of the paintings of Rembrandt. How many of these paintings he actually painted, how many pieces were by students and/or colleagues, but in the course of centuries, others have been assessed as such. Here together in total 679 oil paintings are investigated. The conclusion of the authors is that 395 paintings are by Rembrandt himself and 88 partly by his hand. There are a number of issues raised in the book that were never discussed before. 50 odd portraits of the family Bleker, mostly from the years 1630-1636, are discussed. All these portraits are related to each other, in which Rembrandt has a prominent role. But also other painters, like his contemporary Gerrit Claesz. Bleacher (1602-1656), are dealt with. Earlier attributions are called into question and are often diametrically opposed to prevailing opinions.
