Copy made by Nicolás León of one section of the 1640 manuscript of Diego Basalenque entitled Arte de la lengua matlaltzinga mui copioso y assi mismo una suma y arte abrebiado. The original manuscript was at that time in the possession of León at the Museo Michoacano; today it is held at the John Carter Brown Library.

Summary:

Late 19th-century copy, in the hand of Nicolás León, of the abridged, or abbreviated version of the grammar of the Matlatzinca (Matlalcinga), or Pirinda language, written by the Augustinian friar Diego Basalenque in 1640, contained in a larger work known under the title: Arte de la lengua matlaltzinga mui copioso y assi mismo una suma y arte abrebiado. León, who at the time was the director of the Museo Michaoacano, in Morelia, Mexico, sent the copy to Daniel Garrison Brinton, in Philadelphia, under cover of a letter dated 31 May 1890. In the letter (included here), written in Spanish, on letterhead of the museum, León seems to refer to the transcription as being in need of more correction, evidently alluding to the corrections made in his own hand in a darker ink; and he refers to the possibility that Brinton might have it translated. Also included is a newspaper clipping of León's article about the same language, entitled Origen, estado actual y geografia del idioma pirinda ó matlaltzinca en el estado de Michoacán, presumably from the Gaceta oficial del gobierno del estado de Michoacan de Ocampo, where it was originally published, in 1886.

Foliation: Paper, 23. The manuscript consists of 11 loose bifolia, numbered 1 to 11, preceded by a title page written on a piece of cardboard. Contemporary numeration found on the front of each bifolium in ink, upper left recto, and also in pencil, lower mid or right recto.
