- Notes:
- Polemic by Fridericus Staphylus against Jacob Andreae, and the Lutherans of his time. Staphylus, born in 1513, and educated at Wittenberg under Melanchthon, (re?)turned to Roman Catholicism in 1552. He tended towards moderate reconciling views both as a Lutheran and as a Catholic, and advocated the similarity of the Lutheran and Catholic positions, but the necessity for the authority of the church over Biblical interpretation. He was critical of the disunity of the Lutheran teachers, and of the laxity of some Catholic leaders, contending for reconciliation with both sides acknowledging the same Bible text.
