Summary:
Hine (emerita, York U, Toronto) contributes to the recent surge of interest in the literature of revolutionary, imperial, and Restoration France, by placing the writings of Constance de Salm (1767-1845) within the rich and varied social, literary, scientific, political, and economic ideas of the time. Neglected from the late 19th century through the 20th, she says, her writings have attracted attention during the 21st century, but this is the first general overview of her life, work, influence, and legacy. The first half of the study concentrates on the works that led her to become an important figure on the cultural scene following the Revolution of 1789. The second half looks at her writings during the Empire and Restoration and her legacy. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
