- Summary:
- Anantharam (University of Florida) analyzes the work of four women poets from three different time periods: Kishwar Nahreed (1940- ) and Fahmida Riaz (1946- ), who are Pakistanis writing in Urdu; and Mahadevi Varma (1902-1987) and Gagan Gill (1959- ), Indians writing in Hindi. The author looks at the poets' work in the literary, political, and social contexts of their time periods, and considers the possibility of a relationship between their work and more recent political and religious movements in India and Pakistan and new understandings of identity that transcend caste, class, and religion. Rather than a chapter on each poet, chapters address common themes such as feminism, nationalism, Islamic revitalization, visionary activism, and compassion as social praxis.
