- Summary:
- Li Guo (Arabic studies, U. of Notre Dame) has written a full account of the life, writings, and times of the influential playwright and poet Ibn Daniyal. Written in three "acts", the account incorporates translated passages of the plays into the text, demonstrating how politics and circumstances of popular entertainments and their eventual suppression are described in the plays, either overtly or, more often, through puns and reversals. The result is a fascinating account of life, sex, parties, poetry, and politics in 14th-century Cairo. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
