Summary:
This interesting volume on the practice of architectural preservation examines the re-development of the ancient Sassi of Matera and explores the diverse consequences of politically motivated preservation and development on the cultural and architectural fortunes of historic sites. The work discusses the actions of successive Italian government initiatives for clearing these millennia-old cave houses of their impoverished residents and the development of the site as a tourist attraction, and the role of archaeologists and architects in preserving and re-imagining the future of these cultural treasures. The volume includes numerous black and white photographs. Toxey is a historical preservationist and architect. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
