- Biography/History:
- Bendiner was an architect, artist, and author. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pa. in 1899. Bendiner was educated in Philadelphia, Pa. and attended the Pennsylvania Museum School of Industrial Design. He entered the U. S. Army in 1918. Upon his return to Philadelphia, Bendiner attended the University of Pennsylvania from 1922 to 1927, receiving Bachelor of Architecture and Masters degrees. In 1937 he served as the artist for the University Museum's expedition to Tepe Gawra and Kafaji, Iraq. When he returned in 1937, he married Elizabeth Wheatley Sutro. The couple became lifelong travel companions. Bendiner produced caricatures of concerts and plays for the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin from 1938 until his death in 1964.
- Summary:
- This collection comprises caricatures drawn by Bendiner spanning from 1938 to 1955. The drawings from concerts, stage performances, opera, and theater productions depict actors, conductors, comedians, musicians, and performers. Mediums of the drawings include ink on paper, pencil on paper, or lithographic prints. The caricatures are arranged in alphabetical order by name of performer or title of show. Some of the caricatures were produced for the Philadelphia Evening Bulletin, and some clippings are included in the collection. There is one sketchbook in pastels containing caricatures from the 1929-1930 production of Lysistrata at the Walnut Street Theatre, Philadelphia, Pa. There are some brochures from Alfred Bendiner's posthumous exhibitions dating from 1981 to 1983.
