Summary:
Stimulating growth through adjusting macroeconomic conditions remains the principal policy response to pressing problems of unemployment and poverty, but this policy is often at odds with sustainable development.
Our current growth trajectory has not led to a reduction of our overall resource use - more efficient resource use means that we consume more -and it has not created the conditions for satisfying employment and well-being.
The realisation is that it is necessary to intervene into our national economies and create better frameworks and incentive systems in order to more widely, and rapidly, develop and disseminate workable, innovative solutions to achieve sustainable development.
The task of politics is to build a workable pathway for broad public debate and shared long-term visions.
The authors of this book intend to trigger a dialogue among participants and stakeholders about how we can shape the transformation process towards sustainability.
Growth in Transition presents detailed key arguments for reconsidering the conditions for sustainable economies, with an international cast of commentators from politics, administration, civil society, business and science, engaging with the central question: is there an alternative trajectory for Western economies that sustains well-being whilst confronting ecological and social breakdown?
