- Summary:
- Descriptions and cinematic portrayals of the cruel and brutal punishments during Early Modern times have led modern people to see the executed as victims, Krogh (Danish National Archives) points out. He warns that this limits the possible understanding of what happened and why. In this study, he looks at a class of murderers who cannot by any stretch be considered victims, because they committed their crime for the sole purpose of being punished. He demonstrates what executions without victims might look like. His topics include the murders' social situation and mental state, pietism and the murders, motives, divine demands, the Danish decree of 1767, the role of suicide murders in the penal reform debates, and from salvation to insanity.
