- Summary:
- This supplementary text overviews the issues facing journalism as the industry copes with new digital communication technologies. The book's first chapter looks at concerns journalists have about the online environment and discusses the implications of the industry's initial failure to embrace the Internet. Subsequent chapters delve into the political economy of digital journalism, truth and transparency in online journalism, and news customization. The book outlines the efforts of large corporate news producers to revive the industry, and also looks at the ideas of more innovative thinkers working to develop new modes of journalism under completely different funding models. A case example reveals the BBC's struggles with credibility in an online environment. Other subjects explored include the professional identity of amateur versus professional journalists in the digital era, mobile journalism, and issues of internationalization and anonymity that have resulted in legal efforts to constrain online journalism. The book's plain layout includes boxes and frequent headings. Jones and Salter are affiliated with the University of the West of England. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
