Summary:
Classen (German studies, U. of Arizona) endeavors to "examine how violence and rape have been dealt with in the past, especially by medieval German and their contemporary European poets." He explains that such investigation has been done in English, French, and Spanish medieval literature, but that leaves plenty of unexplored literature rooted in western and central medieval Europe. The study includes such works as Hartmann von Aue's Erec, Henrich Wittenwiler's Ring, and late-medieval popular song poetry and heroic-epic songs. Among the themes: female suffering, fear of women, legal issues, young women and their families. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
