Summary:
Blue (history of Christianity and United Methodist studies, Phillips Theological Seminary, Tulsa, Oklahoma) tells a story of St. Mark's Community Center and the St. Mark's congregation that is a story about women--white, southern women who were products of their time, she says, but who also challenged the prevailing culture in both subtle and dramatic ways, and so brought about a change in New Orleans. The stages of the tale are Methodist women doing settlement work 1895-World War I; work for gender and racial equality 1920s-1960; crises in church, center, and city 1960-65; and post-1965. The study began as her PhD dissertation at Tulane University. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
