Summary:
One of the major problems facing the biomaterials community today is the lack of biocompatible materials that are also capable of electronic operation. Such devices are currently implemented using silicon, which either has to be hermetically sealed so it cannot interact with the body, or else the material is stable in vivo only for short periods of time. Particularly for permanent or long-term devices such as glucose sensors, brain-machine-interface devices, and smart bone and organ implants, a more robust, biocompatible material that the body does not recognize and reject is urgently needed. Silicon Carbide has proven to be one of the most interesting candidate materials to meet this challenge, with recent research pointing towards long-term biocompatible usage of the material with concurrent advanced operational capabilities, across applications as diverse as heart stent coatings, bone implant scaffolds, neurological implants and in vivo biosensors.
This multi-contributor edited reference work directly addresses the formidable scientific and technological challenges of adapting this well-known material to use in the novel biomedical environment.
