Summary:
Frustrated with the lack of success of fish recovery programs, Tyus (environmental science, U. of Colorado-Boulder) decided that increased education about conservation was needed. This textbook is based on an ecology of fishes course he developed and taught, and on responses from students. It has an applied orientation to promote better understanding and use of ecological concepts, with case studies as reality checks. It covers the evolutionary ecology of fishes, fish diversity, freshwater ecosystems, estuarine and marine ecosystems, fish adaptation, and applied ecology: the human factor. More applied ecologists are needed in fishery management and conservation, he says, and stronger links between theory and practice. Annotation ©2011 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
