- Summary:
- While this book is marketed to teachers of grades K-12, most of the suggestions, combined with a chapter devoted to the importance of comprehension instruction in the primary grades and the inclusion of b&w children's book illustrations, seem geared toward teachers of primary grades. However, the authors stress that the ideas are applicable to all levels. Researchers and classroom teachers Hammond and Nessel hope to bring the importance of meaning back to the teaching of reading; they recommend focusing on increasing students' capacity to construct meaning from their reading, ideally alone without the teacher's guidance. They present ideas for using discussion and writing to help students connect emotionally and intellectually with narrative and informational texts. Ideas are illustrated with many classroom lesson dialogues. Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
