Summary:
A collection of poems bound in a black leather, gold-tooled volume, possibly given to a new bride by her husband. The poems chiefly concern love, women, and marriage, and include works by Robert Burns (1759-1796), James Forrest, William Motherwell (1797-1835), and John Wilson (1785-1854). There are some epitaphs, quotations, and Bible verses. Some of the poetry has been arranged artistically and used as a visual device by the writer. Beginning and ending the volume are two watercolors: one is of the New Boomielaw Bridge in Glasgow, Scotland, facing the title page, and one is of Cupid and precedes the last two leaves. Small ink drawings appear at the end of some poems. Two engravings have been tipped into the volume: one is a roundel of ivy where possible evidence of the owners name or a dedication has been scratched out. The other engraving is entitled "The Merchant and His Daughter" and precedes the poem with the same title. Three leaves of manuscript music are tipped in following the appropriate verse. A table of contents follows the title page listing the poems in alphabetical order and makes evident that one leaf of poems is missing. The name Mary Muran, probably a former owner, is written on the silk moire flyleaf.
