Summary:
Shepherd (anthropology and international affairs, George Washington U.) explores interrelationships between the field practices of anthropology, the preservation goals of cultural heritage, and the consumption desires of tourism, focusing in particular on how they interact in relation to what he calls "paradise-scapes." He offers a comparative analysis of the relationships between anthropology, tourism, and heritage with regards to the island of Bali and the Kingdom of Tibet over the course of the 20th century as two examples of "paradise-scapes" in which Western tourists sought to satisfy a "dichotomous desire for physical pleasure and spiritual enlightenment."
