Summary:
During the last quarter of the 16th century and the first quarter of the 17th, explains McInally (Irish and Scottish studies, U. of Aberdeen), Scottish Catholics founded four colleges in continental Europe, because studying for the priesthood or openly displaying their faith was illegal in Scotland. There being five universities in Scotland already, this scatter of colleges served as a sixth, and, along with three Benedictine monasteries in Germany, became the sole Scottish Catholic authority after 1603. He examines their networks and political involvement, the education provided, the students and their backgrounds, Catholic missions in Scotland, and the heritage of the colleges Annotation ©2012 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)
